The HLS scheme funds aerial laser scanning of the New Forest to identify previously undiscovered or unrecorded archaeological sites. So far, more than 3,000 such sites have been identified and preserved for future generations.
In 2017, this pioneering work was recognised with a prestigious national award from Current Archaeology magazine – Archaeological Innovation of the Last 50 Years.
This work has helped to identify sites and monuments that may have fallen into disrepair through damage, erosion or vegetation growth. As a result, a number of sites identified will have improvement works undertaken on them as part of the HLS scheme.
